Boone Oakley all-video website

Last summer I wrote here about the then-fairly-new feature of video annotations on YouTube. At the time, the Samsung “follow your instinct” campaign I talked about was the best example of what could be done with it, but that bar has been decidedly raised. June’s SOTM on theFWA is great little web site implemented completely on YouTube.

The site is for a little agency in Charlotte I hadn’t even heard of called Boone Oakley. As you can see, the design is very simple line drawing animations, but it’s executed with a lot of humor so it’s highly entertaining. Basically they have used annotations for most of the site navigation, but they also did a clever thing by using the video timeline slider as a navigation element, thus contextualizing the site within the YouTube UI itself, as you can see below.

Like any agency site, the whole thing is a pitch about why you (marketing director) should choose them over the competition. Specifically the message is a familiar small-agency one: small and independent allows more creative flexibility than large conglomerates. But truth be told, this story is told in a fun and original enough manner to make the site entertaining, even if you don’t happen to be a creative director.

While this sort of implementation is not exactly fulfilling on the promise of “interactive video” as most people would have imagined it, it’s certainly a novel website. A good idea well executed. And in the small pond of the interactive agency world, it’s garnered Boone Oakley some well-deserved recognition.
